LABUAN — The Labuan Sports Complex is expected to be officially opened to the public in the third quarter of this year after obtaining the Certificate of Practical Completion (CPC).
A spokesperson for the Labuan Public Works Department (PWD) said all components within the scope of the project — including the multipurpose hall, administration block and open courts — have been fully completed, while works at the stadium are now at the final stage.
“Several unavoidable factors affected the completion of this project, including disruptions to the construction material supply chain and difficulties in securing manpower, especially during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021,” the spokesperson told The Labuan Times today.
The spokesperson said appropriate mitigation measures have been and are being implemented, including the addition of resources and workforce from outside Labuan, as well as strengthening engagement with stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution.
“Labuan PWD is closely monitoring the project to ensure all works are carried out according to the specified standards and quality requirements.
“Overall, the project is progressing well, with all parties involved showing strong commitment to ensure it is completed as soon as possible for the benefit of the people of Labuan.
“This upgraded sports complex is expected to play an important role in strengthening sports development in Labuan, while providing more conducive facilities for athletes and supporting community-based sports and recreational activities,” the spokesperson said.
The RM17.3 million project began on Dec 1, 2021 and was originally scheduled for completion within two and a half years. The latest extension of time (EOT) granted to the appointed contractor was until Dec 10, 2025, before the completion date was rescheduled to this year.
Meanwhile, joggers and sports enthusiasts here who regularly used the facilities before the complex was closed for upgrading have expressed their eagerness on social media and to the media for the project to be completed as soon as possible.
