LABUAN – A supermarket here has been taken action against under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599) on last Wednesday by enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Labuan after it was found to have displayed misleading information regarding the prices of goods based on a consumer complaint lodged against the premises.
The spokesperson of KPDN Labuan told that during the inspection, they found a price tag marked “Promotion RM12.99” displayed on packets of instant coffee drinks, while the actual shelf price was RM13.70.
“Further checks using a price scanner confirmed that the system price was also RM13.70, indicating a discrepancy that could mislead consumers,” said the spokesperson.
As a result, the items were seized for further investigation under the same Act. If found guilty, a corporate entity may be fined up to RM100,000 for a first offence and up to RM200,000 for subsequent offences.
For individuals, the penalty for a first offence includes a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to three years, or both. For subsequent offences, the fine can reach RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
In a separate operation, another KPDN enforcement team conducted routine inspections at retail premises and public markets around Labuan. Most traders were found to be complying with the regulations, with sufficient controlled goods supplies, adherence to price controls and valid business licences.
