LABUAN — The Malaysian Retired Education Service Officers Association, Labuan Branch (5PM DC W.P. Labuan), demonstrated that the spirit of teaching endures beyond retirement through its “Kami Sayang Kamu” (We Love You) charity programme for asnaf and orphaned children on March 5.
Its chairperson, Dayang Pungut Abdul Jalil, said that although members had long left the classroom, they continued to embody the values of educators by showing concern for students from underprivileged families.
“Our souls remain the souls of educators, and we feel a responsibility to care, especially for these asnaf and orphaned children as they prepare to welcome Ramadan and Aidilfitri,” she told reporters.
She said the assistance was intended to bring joy to the children while helping ease the financial burden on their families during preparations for the festive season.
The programme, now an annual initiative, also aims to encourage the students to strive for success while reminding them that the community—particularly educators—continues to support them.
Dayang Pungut said funds provided by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) were distributed to 60 students from SMK Lajau and SMK Mutiara.
In addition, eight students from SMK Rancha-Rancha received assistance through voluntary contributions from association members and several donors.
She expressed appreciation to the Labuan Education Department, MAIWP Labuan, individual donors and members of 5PM DC W.P. Labuan for their support in making the programme possible.
“Without the close cooperation of all parties, the effort to bring joy to these asnaf and orphaned children would not have been realised in such a meaningful way,” she said. (Japen)
