LABUAN — The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) Labuan Branch has intensified its community outreach, providing critical assistance to fire victims, local fishermen, and individuals requiring urgent medical equipment.

Speaking on the initiatives, MAIWP Labuan Branch Manager Ustaz Mohd Rafie Zakaria emphasized the council’s commitment to providing a swift and comprehensive safety net for the community. Following a late-night blaze that occurred around 11 PM, Ustaz Mohd Rafie led the MAIWP Labuan Disaster Squad to the UTC Labuan Vegetable Market this morning to assess the damage to eight affected stalls.

“Our priority is to lighten the immediate burden of these traders,” said Ustaz Mohd Rafie. He confirmed that MAIWP has already distributed food basket kits as initial support and will further coordinate aid through the Disaster Relief Scheme for all victims while authorities investigate the cause of the fire.

Yesterday, through the MAIWP Fisheries Capital Incentive Assistance Scheme, the council channeled RM13,700 to provide two 15hp boat engines to veteran fishermen at Pantai Shell Timur.

“Both fishermen had faced significant difficulties as their previous engines were beyond repair. We hope this assistance allows them to resume their daily activities, which are their primary source of income,” he added.

In the spirit of the final 10 nights of Ramadan, Ustaz Mohd Rafie also officiated a Khatam Al-Quran & Iftar ceremony at the Darul Kifayah Complex Hall. During the event, food basket vouchers totaling RM4,037 were distributed to 98 selected students from SMA MAIWP Labuan to support their needs during this holy month.

Ustaz Mohd Rafie also detailed recent medical aid approvals for residents facing chronic health challenges. Among them:

  • A 78-year-old woman diagnosed with intestinal obstruction due to colon cancer received drainable ostomy pouches valued at RM3,960.

  • A 33-year-old woman diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF) and Hyperparathyroidism, who currently undergoes dialysis three times a week and close monitoring due to high phosphate and calcium levels, received RM3,280 in aid.

“I hope all this aid will ease the burden faced by the recipients,” Ustaz Mohd Rafie concluded.
