KENINGAU — Three structures, including two houses and a surau, were razed in an early morning fire at Kampung Pagar-Pagar Sondoton here on Monday.
Keningau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Serevinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sinkui said the department received a distress call via MERS 999 at 12.53am.
A 10-man Bravo team led by Operations Commander PBK I Selverinus Sixtus Geofrey was rushed to the scene, about 3km away, with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit and a water tanker.
“Upon arrival at 1am, the fire had already engulfed three non-permanent structures, which were completely destroyed,” he said.
Firefighters deployed a 300-foot hose line with two nozzles, sourcing water from the fire engine, tanker and a nearby hydrant.
The blaze was brought under control at 1.44am, preventing it from spreading further.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
The operation ended at 3am after ensuring the area was safe, and the team returned to the station.
Serevinus thanked the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for assisting at the scene.
He also conveyed condolences to the affected families and urged the public to prioritise fire safety, including not leaving cooking unattended, unplugging unused electrical items and avoiding overcharging devices.
He stressed that every home should have at least one dry powder fire extinguisher (6kg–9kg) as a first line of defence.
“Quick action can prevent small fires from becoming major incidents and help save lives and property,” he said.
For emergencies, members of the public can call 999.
