LABUAN — The National Art Gallery continues to strengthen its efforts in preserving and conserving the national visual arts collection through its Conservation in Action initiative. This “open conservation” approach allows visitors to witness the conservation process first-hand within the gallery space.

A spokesperson for the National Art Gallery stated that the initiative serves as a public education platform aimed at increasing understanding of the importance of conservation in ensuring the long-term sustainability of artworks.

“Through Conservation in Action, visitors have the opportunity to explore the technical processes involved in art restoration, including condition assessments and preventative measures taken to control environmental factors that could potentially damage the physical state of the works. This approach also empowers the Art Hospital, which is responsible for the care, treatment, and preservation of the national visual arts collection,” the spokesperson added.

During this initiative, the Conservation Branch will perform cleaning works on a piece titled Imitation Master – Legacy by artist Ali Nurazmal Yusoff. This artwork is currently on display in Gallery 2A as part of the TERKINI 2015–2025 Acquisitions Exhibition.

Conservation work will take place from 24 February to 15 March 2026, between 9:30 am and 12:00 pm, and resuming from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm throughout the period.

The National Art Gallery invites the public to observe this process and appreciate the vital role of conservation in ensuring our artworks remain preserved for the future. Admission is free.
