LABUAN — Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) is committed to strengthening ties with the local community through knowledge-sharing initiatives involving mosques and religious institutions.
UMSKAL Director Prof Dr Shamsul Bahari Shamsudin said universities have an important role in serving as centres of enlightenment, generating innovation and driving inclusive socio-economic well-being in society.
He said this when delivering a special Isyak lecture titled “The Role of Universities in Society” at Masjid Jamek Layang-Layangan here on Thursday night.
“Universities play a role as centres of education and training by producing skilled and professional workers to meet industry needs and support national development.
“They also contribute through research and innovation by producing scientific studies and long-term solutions to address social, health and environmental challenges,” he said.
Shamsul Bahari said universities also had a responsibility to bring academic expertise to the community through awareness and sustainable development programmes, while fostering critical thinking, compassion and harmony.
He welcomed greater collaboration between UMSKAL and the community, including mosques and religious institutions, and encouraged the campus to serve as a reference point for knowledge and expertise.
He said lecturers and staff could be invited to share their knowledge, expertise and experience in their respective fields with the local community.
At the same time, he encouraged UMSKAL students to organise community and religious programmes with local residents, enabling them to learn about the customs and culture of the people in the Federal Territory of Labuan.
“Public universities generally play an important role in producing capable and outstanding future leaders who can lead the country and society.
“University personnel are always eager to serve the community, and UMSKAL remains committed to contributing to national prosperity and improving the well-being of the people in an inclusive manner,” he said.
Earlier, the congregation performed Maghrib prayers and recited Surah Yasin before the special Isyak lecture.
Also present were Masjid Jamek Layang-Layangan (MJLL) chairman Basran Jamil and his deputy, Hamir Zahari.
Basran expressed appreciation for UMSKAL’s continued cooperation and commitment in helping organise various programmes at Masjid Jamek Layang-Layangan.
