LABUAN — Five cases of open burning have been detected in Labuan through public complaints and enforcement patrols since the haze began on Aug 31, according to the Department of Environment (DOE).
The open burning activities were detected at several locations, including Jalan Tenaga, Jalan Sawangan Cina, Billion Waterfront and Jalan Tanjung Batu, as well as surrounding areas.
The DOE said investigations were conducted under Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
“Verbal warnings were issued to those involved, while brochures on the prohibition of open burning were also distributed for public awareness and as a reminder,” it said.
The department added that follow-up monitoring was being conducted periodically by DOE enforcement officers to ensure compliance and prevent further open burning activities.
The DOE also urged the public to refrain from open burning, particularly during the current haze conditions, which could further affect air quality.
