LABUAN — New students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) have been urged to become visionary graduates who can contribute to the development of the university and the country in the future.
UMSKAL Director Prof Dr Shamsul Bahari Shamsudin said students should manage their time wisely, practise self-accountability, manage technology and finances responsibly, and understand the relevance of their respective fields of study.
He also advised them to develop emotional intelligence and uphold humanitarian values to remain relevant and competitive while becoming good leaders in the future.
“What is certain is that new students must be wiser in managing their time by distinguishing between what is important and what is urgent.
“Proper prioritisation will certainly save you from last-minute pressure.
“Most importantly, as we navigate the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is rapidly transforming the employment landscape, do not become complacent in facing the challenges of today’s world,” he said.
He said this after the Pledge and Declaration of Commitment Ceremony held as part of the 32nd Orientation Week for the 2026/2027 academic session at the UMSKAL Main Hall recently.
Also present were Faculty of Labuan International Finance (FKAL) Dean Assoc Prof Dr Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal, Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI) Deputy Dean (Postgraduate and International) Dr Nooralisa Tuah and UMSKAL Head of Administration Sharifah Ismail.
A total of 447 new UMSKAL students attended the ceremony, comprising 328 students from FKAL and 119 from FKI.
Shamsul Bahari urged the students to make full use of the opportunities available on campus to deepen their knowledge, build networks and become the next generation of leaders who will drive the country’s progress.
“May your educational journey at UMSKAL be a meaningful experience that provides opportunities to explore your potential, build friendships and achieve various successes throughout your university life.
“Make the most of every opportunity, gain as much knowledge and experience as possible, and continue moving forward with determination and commitment to achieve your aspirations,” he said.
He stressed that university life was not limited to academic learning in lecture halls, but also provided opportunities to develop character, leadership and soft skills.
He added that gaining admission to the university was proof of the students’ hard work and the sacrifices made by themselves, their families and those who had supported them.
“At UMSKAL, you are not here merely to gain knowledge, but also to develop leadership, character and meaningful friendships.
“Make the most of every moment at UMSKAL, take part in beneficial activities and do not be afraid to try something new,” he said.
