SEPANG, Selangor — Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn Bhd (GMSB), a wholly owned subsidiary of NMB (NanoMalaysia Berhad), an implementing agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), has achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification for the Provision of Battery Production, becoming the first company within the NMB Group to attain the internationally recognised quality management standard.
The certification marks a significant milestone in GMSB’s transition from technology development and industrialisation to structured commercial manufacturing, with a quality management framework covering process consistency, quality assurance, continuous improvement and customer requirements.
The certification covers GMSB’s battery production operations at its Suria Industrial Park facility in Sepang and is valid from Sept 30, 2026 to Sept 29, 2029.
GMSB operates a 15,000-square-foot battery manufacturing facility with an initial annual production capacity of approximately 1 MWh, equivalent to about 92,000 cells.
The facility was established to translate Malaysian-developed battery technologies and intellectual property into commercially manufacturable products, while supporting production validation, customer qualification and future scale-up.
GMSB currently produces and industrialises locally developed graphene-enhanced lithium-ion battery technology, supporting NMB’s efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s capabilities in advanced materials, battery technology and energy storage.
NMB Chief Executive Officer Prof (Adj) Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad said the certification was an important step towards establishing a robust and commercially sustainable battery manufacturing capability.
“As we move Malaysian-developed technologies from research and development into production, internationally recognised quality management practices are essential to ensuring consistency, traceability and confidence among our customers and partners.
“This achievement also demonstrates that homegrown Malaysian technologies can progress beyond the laboratory and be industrialised through disciplined manufacturing processes that meet internationally recognised standards,” he said.
Nearly 100 per cent of GMSB’s workforce is Malaysian, with women accounting for more than 70 per cent of its team.
Its battery research, development and manufacturing activities are led by Ts Dr Nurul Akmaliah Dzulkurnain.
The certification further strengthens GMSB’s foundation as it develops Malaysia’s domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem and contributes to technological capability, energy resilience and participation in the growing clean-energy value chain.
