KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) unveiled two major initiatives — the MIA Sustainability Showcase 2025 and the MIA Certificate of Sustainability for Accountants — aimed at strengthening the profession’s leadership in sustainability.
Themed “Empowering Accountants for a Sustainable Future,” the inaugural Sustainability Showcase highlights the profession’s growing role in embedding environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into business, translating strategy into measurable impact, and enhancing accountability.
Speaking in her capacity as MIA’s newly appointed president effective Dec 8, 2025, Saniza Said said:
“To ensure our members benefit fully, MIA is offering the Sustainability Showcase on a complimentary basis, supported by our RM1.1 million allocation to enhance members’ development, skills and future-readiness.”
The event brought together nearly 600 chartered accountants along with sustainability leaders, industry experts, regulators, technology providers, academics and practitioners. It centred on two key pillars:
•Sustainability frameworks and regulatory developments to prepare accountants for a rapidly evolving landscape; and
•Reporting and sustainability in practice to drive tangible results and equip professionals to meet changing stakeholder expectations.
At the Showcase, MIA also officially launched the MIA Certificate of Sustainability for Accountants, a structured three-day learning pathway designed to equip accountancy professionals, finance leaders and sustainability practitioners with essential technical and practical competencies in ESG and sustainability reporting, climate-related disclosures, assurance and strategic advisory.
“The programme is one of the initiatives under the MIA Sustainability Roadmap, which operationalises the MIA Sustainability Blueprint for the Accountancy Profession. The Roadmap comprises 169 initiatives planned over a five-year period,” Saniza said.
The two newly launched initiatives form part of MIA’s broader effort to strengthen sustainability readiness across the profession. Its holistic and integrated approach includes:
• the MIA Sustainability Blueprint for the Accountancy Profession;
• the MIA Sustainability Framework and Strategy Plan, which supports institutional preparedness;
• the National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) Symposium;
• continuous professional development programmes; and
• collaborations with regulators and international bodies.
“Looking ahead, the shift towards sustainability will continue to accelerate. To stay competitive, Malaysia must build a profession that is digitally enabled, ethically grounded and sustainability competent. Strategic collaboration among industry, government, academia and professional bodies is essential to ensure that businesses and organisations, especially SMEs, are included in this transition,” Saniza added.
