LABUAN — A 33-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a road accident involving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) at Jalan Rancha-Rancha early Sunday morning.
Labuan District Police Chief Mohd Hamizi Halim said the accident occurred at about 12.20am and involved a Yamaha LC135 motorcycle ridden by the victim and a Toyota Harrier SUV driven by a 44-year-old local woman.
Preliminary investigations found that the SUV, which was travelling from Rancha-Rancha towards Kerupang, allegedly entered the opposite lane and collided head-on with the motorcycle coming from Labuan town centre.
“As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Labuan Nucleus Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 1.15am,” said Mohd Hamizi in a media statement today.
He added that the SUV driver was not injured in the incident.
The victim’s body has been sent to the hospital’s forensic unit for a post-mortem examination, while the driver has been detained to assist police investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. If convicted, the offender faces a jail term of between five and 10 years, a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM50,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence.
Mohd Hamizi urged all road users to obey traffic rules and drive responsibly to ensure safety on the roads and prevent similar tragedies.
