University of Malaya Apologizes for Controversial Theater Performance as Student Union Demands Action

KUALA LUMPUR — Universiti Malaya has issued an official apology following a theater performance that went viral on social media and sparked widespread public backlash, while the university’s student union has condemned the production and demanded accountability.

In a media statement released today, the university acknowledged that a performance at the Carnival Theater (KARVITER) Universiti Malaya contained elements that violated the competition’s established guidelines.

“The research findings indicate that there is an inconsistency with the original script that had gone through the screening process and clearly constitutes a violation of the competition terms that have been set,” the statement read.

The university emphasized that according to KARVITER’s general terms and conditions, all performances must be free from negative elements, provocations, or any content that could tarnish religious values, morals, ethics, culture, and the university’s reputation.

“Universiti Malaya hereby apologizes for the loss that has occurred and any concerns that have arisen. The University does not compromise on any violations of guidelines, programs, or regulations that have been established,” the statement added.

The controversial performance has been disqualified from evaluation, and the university said follow-up action is currently being taken to strengthen monitoring and ensure such incidents do not recur.

In a separate statement today, the Universiti Malaya Students’ Union (KMUM) strongly condemned the theater performance, alleging it displayed indecent elements and content that violated decency norms and contradicted Islamic religious values.

“A performance that should serve as a medium for art, intellectualism, and student character development cannot be misused as a space to normalize immoral content and trigger discomfort among the campus community,” KMUM stated.

The student union issued two firm demands:

  1. Public Apology Within 24 Hours
The theater group involved must issue a public apology to the entire campus community within 24 hours. “Failure to do so demonstrates an irresponsible attitude toward the sensitivity of a society inhabited by a Muslim majority and the noble values of the institution,” KMUM said.
  2. Organizer Responsibility and Immediate Action
KMUM emphasized that organizers cannot deflect responsibility and are fully accountable for content presented under their program. The union demanded immediate action and investigation against those involved without delay.

The incident has generated significant attention on social media, with various reactions from the public regarding artistic expression boundaries and cultural sensitivity on campus.
