Teacher Quarters, School Canteen Destroyed in Tongod Fire

KINABATANGAN — Two blocks of teachers’ quarters, a school canteen and a car were destroyed in a fire at SK Imbak, Tongod, yesterday evening.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 6.24pm and mobilised personnel from the Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by the Tongod Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The volunteer team arrived at the scene at 7.54pm, about 167km from the station.

Operations commander PB Saripuddin Ali Hassan said the fire involved two blocks of teachers’ quarters comprising four units.

“A school canteen and a Proton Saga BLM car were also destroyed,” he said.

The blaze was brought under control at 11.05pm and operations ended at 11.18pm.

Members of the public had earlier put out the fire using private water pumps and water from a public tank before firefighters arrived. Firefighters later inspected the area to ensure there were no further hazards.

No casualties were reported in the incident.
