LABUAN — Eleven students from the Faculty of Labuan International Finance (FKAL), Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL), have successfully implemented the LumiCalm Space project to upgrade the Snoezelen room at the Labuan Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre (PPDK).

The project, carried out under the Service-Learning Malaysia–University for Society (SULAM) initiative for the GT30203 International Corporate Finance course, was supervised by SULAM Project Coordinator Dr Suzillah Sidek.

The initiative, undertaken with the Labuan PPDK community in collaboration with the Malaysian Social Welfare Department (JKM), aimed to create a more conducive, comfortable and inclusive sensory space for trainees at the centre.

Through a crowdfunding campaign on the KitaFund platform, the students raised RM3,049, which was used to provide an air-conditioning unit, two sensory lamps and a printer for the use of teachers and trainees at PPDK Labuan.

The project is expected to help enhance the trainees’ sensory development and learning experience in a more interactive and comfortable environment.

It is also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being and SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities, through efforts to improve emotional well-being and provide more inclusive learning facilities for the PPDK Labuan community.

The LumiCalm Space launching ceremony was officiated by Labuan Federal Territory Social Welfare Department Psychology Officer Maradona Lawrence Janting.

Also present were PPDK Labuan president Romini Wahab, PPDK supervisor Dayangku Norizah Pengiran Zainal, JKM officer Esther George Ingkai, project supervisor Dr Suzillah Sidek and project director Venesfelya Etai.

Various sensory activities were also conducted with PPDK Labuan trainees throughout the programme to enhance social interaction, while providing the participating students with community-based learning experience.

The project involved 11 FKAL students, namely Venesfelya Etai, Hew Wei Hoe, Leann Chew Xian En, Tan Yuh Che, Cheng Chi Yii, Aleyna Naguk, Millery Jane, Gwyneth Arep Lasong, Dolley Anak Panggil, Azzariza Azren Ismardi and Nurdamia Khaleedah Azrul Effendy.
