LABUAN — Staff of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) gained insights into media engagement and issue management through a Corporate Unplugged talk titled “Media Chat and Issue Management” here today.

The session was delivered by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Corporate Communications Head Mohamad Hafizi Rosli, who has extensive experience and expertise in corporate communications, particularly media and issue management.

Mohamad Hafizi, who has served as MOHE Corporate Communications Head since 2023, is responsible for communication and publicity strategies, media relations, crisis and public issue management, as well as complaints and customer management.

He said the media played an important role in disseminating information, educating the public, providing a platform for the people’s voices, shaping perceptions and promoting public understanding.

“Media is important to MOHE in building its image and reputation, serving as a communication and promotional channel, commercialising innovation and research, sharing knowledge and expertise, and serving as a reference point for current issues,” he said.

He also highlighted the contribution of academics in enlightening the public, combating fake news, guiding national policies and improving community well-being through knowledge sharing and practical advice.

The session, held at the Eureka Room, was attended by UMSKAL Director Professor Dr Shamsul Bahari Shamsudin.

Shamsul Bahari said he hoped academics from the Labuan Faculty of International Finance (FKAL), Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI) and Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning (PPIB) would share their knowledge and expertise with the media to enhance public understanding of current issues.

Also present were FKAL Dean Associate Professor Dr Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal and UMSKAL Head of Administration Sharifah Ismail.

The programme began with a prayer led by UMSKAL Assistant Islamic Affairs Officer Mohd Khairul Isham Abd Latiff.

The session concluded with a group photography session, followed by Mohamad Hafizi taking in the panoramic view of Labuan from the 13th floor of the UMSKAL Tower, which also houses the Labuan Federal Territory Crescent Observation Centre.
