LABUAN — SMK Mutiara emerged as the overall champion of the 2026 State-Level Fire Cadet Camp organised by Labuan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM Labuan) after securing four gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
SMK Mutiara topped the overall medal standings with seven medals, ahead of SM St Anne in second place with two gold and three bronze medals, while SM Sains Labuan finished third with one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
The three-day programme, held from Aug 21 to 23, brought together 241 students from 10 schools across the Federal Territory of Labuan. It was the first state-level Fire Cadet camp organised by JBPM Labuan since 2019, following a seven-year gap.
SMK Mutiara’s gold medals came from the Men’s and Women’s Dry Operations Drill categories, the Foot Drill category and the Men’s Fire Drill category, according to the official competition results.
Other participating schools were SMK Rancha-Rancha, SMK Pantai, SM St Anthony, SMA MAIWP, SMK Labuan, SMK Lajau and SMK Taman Perumahan Bedaun.
The programme featured competitions including Knots and Lashings, ASPEC Challenge, Dry Operations Drill, Brain and Brawn and Cadet Challenge, testing participants’ physical abilities, problem-solving skills, communication, discipline and teamwork.
JBPM Labuan director PgKB I Abd Rahman Ali said the programme was aimed at developing a disciplined younger generation with leadership qualities, resilience and a strong spirit of teamwork.
He said the programme should not be viewed solely as a competition to determine winners, but also as an opportunity for participants to gain knowledge, experience, discipline, friendship and teamwork.
“Participation in the Fire Cadet programme is not merely about wearing a uniform or taking part in competitions. It is a process of building character,” he said in his speech at the closing ceremony.
He also urged the cadets to apply the knowledge gained during the programme at school, at home and within the community, while becoming fire safety ambassadors among their families and friends.
Abd Rahman said the programme also provided participants with exposure to the fire and rescue profession, noting that some of the cadets could potentially join JBPM as officers or personnel in the future.
He expressed appreciation to the Labuan Federal Territory Education Department, the participating schools, teachers, parents, organisers, trainers, officers and JBPM personnel for ensuring the programme was conducted smoothly and safely.
The programme involved nine gold-medal events, 10 silver-medal events and 12 bronze-medal events, according to the official competition results.
Abd Rahman officially closed the 2026 State-Level Fire Cadet Programme at the JBPM Labuan headquarters’ multipurpose hall on Aug 23.
