KOTA KINABALU — The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) inspected 76 hotel premises statewide under the Task Force Ops Trigger 2026 conducted simultaneously on Sept 2, with 34 compounds totalling RM4,600 issued for offences detected.
The operation, conducted from 10 am to 3 pm, focused on detecting and taking enforcement action against hotel premises found to have deliberately deactivated, isolated, bypassed or switched off fire alarm systems without valid technical reasons, an offence under Section 55 of the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341).
Sabah JBPM director PKPjB Mohd Pisar Aziz said the operation was not solely aimed at issuing compounds but also at ensuring hotel management took fire safety seriously and kept their fire alarm systems operational at all times.
“Occupants’ and guests’ safety is a priority. Fire alarm systems are an important component in providing early warnings during emergencies and should not be deactivated without valid technical reasons,” he said in a statement today.
He said JBPM Sabah viewed seriously any action that could compromise a safe environment due to failures in fire safety systems, as this could pose risks to the lives of occupants, particularly at accommodation premises with high occupancy and sleeping risks.
Mohd Pisar said JBPM Sabah would continue to intensify enforcement and monitoring to ensure fire safety compliance at high-risk premises, particularly hotels, remained at the prescribed level.
He said the implementation of Task Force Ops Trigger 2026 was also part of the department’s ongoing efforts to strengthen enforcement and raise awareness and compliance among premises management regarding fire safety requirements.
