LABUAN — The Labuan Research, Innovation and Creativity Society (LaRIS) held its 11th international seminar and showcase in Kunming, Yunnan, China on Sept 4, featuring research and innovations in language teaching and STEM.
The LaRIS 11th International Creativity and Innovation in Education for Language Teaching & STEM Seminar & Showcase was held at the Holiday Inn Express Kunming Railway Station and brought together researchers, educators and participants from Malaysia and abroad.
LaRIS chairman Dr Hyginus Lester Junior Lee said 51 participants registered as online presenters, while 13 registered for face-to-face presentations and another 12 as seminar participants in Yunnan.
He said 29 participants also took part in an educational tour covering Kunming, Dali and Lijiang from Aug 29 to Sept 5.
Among the featured online presenters was Associate Professor Dr Nurulanningsih of Universitas Tridinanti, Palembang, Indonesia, who presented her study titled “Pergeseran Makna Dalam Komentar Di Akun Tiktok” on the changing meanings of terms used by netizens on social media.
Filipino featured online presenter Joseph P. Nacionales of Eastern Visayas State University discussed pre-service teacher motivation during crises in his presentation titled “(De)Motivation of Pre-Service Teachers in Times of Crisis”.
Lee said this year’s programme also recorded its highest number of judges, with 14 participants from Malaysia and abroad, including Marge Joseph C. Sardo of the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education, Japan, and Esther Koh of Te Kura o Matarangi Northcote School, New Zealand.
For the online presentation category, Noor Hasimah Mohd Ayub and Anatasia Ah Kian of SMK Mutiara, Labuan, won the judges’ top Diamond Prize in the good teaching practices category for their presentation titled “IBET Strategy Framework: From Zero Ideas to Meaningful Writing”.
Gold awards were also won by Sylvianie William and Noor Hasimah Mohd Ayub of SMK Mutiara, Labuan, for “The Time Bomb Strategy”.
Other gold award winners in the online presentation category were Noorhassanah @ Bolkiah Noor Mohamed, Siti Haslinda Abdul Latif and Lai Mui Kyun @ Josephine Lai of SK Unggun, Sabah; Dg Kharlinah Mohammed of SMK Rancha-Rancha, Labuan; Dewi Salam and Zul Hafiezy Zulkifly of SMK Lajau, Labuan; Adeline Leong Suk Yee of IPG Kent, Sabah; and Khairul Azwani Ahinin of SK Darau, Sabah.
For face-to-face presentations in China, gold awards went to Fatin Nurulizyan Mohd Yakof of SM Sains Labuan, Michele Edmund of SJKC Chung Hwa, Labuan, Rajeswari Perumal of IPG Gaya, Sabah, Hyginus Lester of the Labuan Federal Territory Education Department, Nuridayu Shapi of SJKC Chung Hwa, Kota Kinabalu, and Lusia Gampalid of SK Kota Marudu II, Sabah.
