LABUAN — Three business operators were issued compounds by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) in the Federal Territory of Labuan today for failing to display cash selling price tags on goods and food offered for sale.
KPDN Labuan director Junaidah Arbain said three compound notices were issued against the operators for violating the Control of Prices and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking for Goods and Charges for Services) Order 2020, made under the Control of Supplies and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723).
She said two of the cases involved retail premises, while the third involved a food outlet.
“Inspection found that the retail premises had failed to display cash selling price tags on goods offered to consumers, while the food outlet had failed to display cash selling prices for ready-to-eat food offered for sale,” she said in a statement today.
Junaidah said two teams of KPDN Labuan enforcement officers conducted the inspections at premises outside Labuan town following consumer complaints about pricing issues.
She said displaying price tags was important to ensure consumers had clear information on prices before making purchasing decisions, as well as to facilitate price comparisons and prevent confusion during transactions.
Under the relevant provisions, individuals convicted of the offence can be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed for up to two years, or both.
For repeat offences, the penalty can be increased to a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both. Companies can be fined up to RM100,000 for a first offence and up to RM250,000 for subsequent offences.
Junaidah reminded traders not to take lightly the requirement to clearly display cash selling price tags for all goods offered for sale, including ready-to-eat food at food premises.
She also urged consumers with information or complaints regarding traders’ non-compliance, particularly on pricing and price marking, to channel them through KPDN’s official complaint channels for further action.
