KOTA KINABALU — One man was killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Kota Kinabalu while another was injured after a metal rod pierced his foot in separate incidents in Sabah today.
In the first incident, a 44-year-old man was killed after being trapped in a Toyota Hilux involved in a road accident involving seven vehicles and a motorcycle at the flyover heading towards Luyang.
The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received a distress call at 6.33 am and firefighters from the Lintas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) arrived at the scene at 6.41 am, about seven kilometres away.
It said six firefighters used specialised rescue equipment to extricate the victim from the vehicle.
“The victim was successfully extricated but was pronounced dead at the scene by Ministry of Health (MOH) personnel,” it said in a statement today.
The victim’s remains were subsequently handed over to the police for further action, while the operation ended at 7.55 am after the area was declared safe.
In the second incident, firefighters assisted medical personnel in removing a metal rod that had pierced the foot of a 34-year-old Indonesian man at the Emergency Department of Tambunan Hospital.
JBPM said the incident occurred while the victim was carrying out house renovation work, according to his co-worker, who subsequently took him to the hospital for treatment.
Four firefighters from the Tambunan Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the hospital at 9.10 am, three minutes after receiving the call.
“Firefighters used specialised equipment to cut and remove the metal rod to facilitate further treatment by MOH personnel,” it said.
The injured victim was subsequently handed over to MOH personnel for further treatment.
The operation, led by Fire Officer II Julinah Abat, ended at 9.20 am.
