LABUAN — The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) Labuan branch has issued a compound against a restaurant operator for using an expired weighing instrument for commercial transactions.
KPDN Labuan director Junaidah Arbain said the action was taken following a complaint received through the ministry’s official e-Aduan portal.
She said enforcement officers inspected the restaurant at about 7 pm today and found that the operator was using a Saigon double-sided spring balance with a capacity of five kilogrammes for transactions.
“Further checks found that the weighing instrument’s verification had expired on March 14, 2020, but it was still being used for trade without undergoing re-verification,” she said in a statement today.
Junaidah said the operator was issued a compound for an offence under Subsection 14(1) of the Weights and Measures Act 1972 (Act 71), which prohibits the use of weighing instruments for trade without valid verification as required under the Act.
She said KPDN Labuan took the use of weighing and measuring instruments in commercial transactions seriously to ensure that measurements were accurate and consumers’ rights were protected.
“Traders using weighing or measuring instruments for commercial purposes are advised not to wait for inspections or enforcement action before renewing their verification.
“They should regularly check the expiry dates themselves to ensure that all instruments used remain within their valid verification period,” she said.
Junaidah said compliance with weights and measures requirements was not only a legal responsibility but also important to ensure accurate measurements, transparent transactions and consumer confidence in businesses.
“KPDN Labuan will continue to conduct inspections based on complaints and periodic monitoring to ensure compliance with the laws enforced,” she said.
