MANILA — Malaysia secured 20 accolades at the ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA) 2026, including eight category wins, seven first runner-up positions and five second runner-up positions.

The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) said the achievement surpassed the country’s performance in 2025, when Malaysia received 16 accolades, including six wins.

The ministry said the latest achievement reflected the growing capabilities and excellence of Malaysian organisations in implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives.

The accolades were secured under the ASEAN Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices Awards and ASEAN Renewable Energy Project Awards, covering projects in energy-efficient and green buildings, biogas, solar and micro-hydropower.

Recognition was also given to projects involving emerging and innovative technologies, including green hydrogen, waste-to-energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

PETRA said the organisations had first received recognition at the national level through the National Energy Awards (NEA) 2026 before representing Malaysia at the AEA 2026.

“The NEA serves as a national platform to recognise excellence among organisations in implementing sustainable energy initiatives, while identifying high-performing organisations with the potential to represent Malaysia at the ASEAN level,” it said in a statement today.

The AEA 2026 was held in Manila, the Philippines, in conjunction with the 44th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) and the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF).

PETRA said Malaysia’s achievement at the regional level demonstrated the ability of local industries, businesses and institutions to realise the country’s energy transition aspirations through practical and innovative energy solutions.

It also reflected strategic cooperation between the Government, industry and strategic partners in strengthening the country’s energy ecosystem.

The ministry said the achievement supported the National Energy Policy 2022-2040 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) in developing a secure, sustainable and inclusive energy system, while strengthening Malaysia’s long-term economic competitiveness.

The efforts will continue to be strengthened through the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2.0 (NEEAP 2.0) for 2026-2035, which targets cumulative energy savings of 815,000 terajoules (TJ) over its 10-year implementation period.

The plan is expected to generate about RM85 billion in energy cost savings, attract RM36 billion in private investment and create around 29,000 jobs.

PETRA said the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024, NETR and NEEAP 2.0 would serve as key foundations in strengthening the implementation of the country’s energy efficiency agenda, encouraging investment and innovation, and enhancing Malaysia’s energy security and economic competitiveness.

PETRA, together with the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA Malaysia) and relevant stakeholders, will continue strengthening cooperation with industry to expand the adoption of energy efficiency practices and renewable energy.

The ministry also congratulated all the recipients for their outstanding achievements and contribution towards raising Malaysia’s profile at the AEA 2026.
