LABUAN — Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) is strengthening mental health awareness and psychological well-being among its campus community through a two-day Mental Well-being Empowerment Workshop that began today.

The workshop, organised by UMSKAL’s Student Affairs Division, aims to promote self-awareness, equip participants with stress management skills, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and strengthen the role of Student Peer Mentors (PRS) as an inclusive peer support network.

The opening ceremony was officiated by UMSKAL Deputy Chief Psychology Officer and PRS Coordinator Nur Iman Reedzal, who represented the campus director. She congratulated the organising committee and emphasised the importance of empowering students to support their own mental well-being and that of their peers.

Also present were Labuan Women’s Centre manager Salhah Matnor, Labuan Hospital Nucleus counselling psychology officer Mohd Nabihan Adli, UMSKAL Student Affairs Division staff and programme director Elmah Shilmah Villiamor.

The two-day programme features a comprehensive range of activities covering mental health awareness, clinical perspectives and practical approaches to emotional recovery.

The first day focuses on mental well-being and psychosocial support through a session titled “Kesejahteraan Diri dan Anda” conducted with the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) Labuan, community advocacy briefings on PRISMAnita and Skuad Waja by the Women’s Development Office, and a self-injury prevention session delivered by a psychology officer from Labuan Hospital Nucleus.

Participants will also take part in mindfulness exercises to help them manage stress and improve emotional awareness.

The second day focuses on practical emotional recovery techniques, including an art therapy workshop guided by UMSKAL’s Deputy Chief Psychology Officer, a culinary relaxation activity titled “Happiness in the Kitchen” in collaboration with Labuan Vocational College, and a nature-based therapy module called “Grounding with Gardening”.

The workshop will conclude with a Zumba exercise session.

The initiative reflects UMSKAL’s continued commitment to nurturing emotionally resilient students and fostering greater awareness of psychological well-being throughout the campus community.
