Educators from Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah tour SMK Labuan and UMSKAL to share best practices.
LABUAN — A delegation of 12 lecturers from Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, Brunei Darussalam, conducted a goodwill visit to the Form Six Centre of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Labuan to strengthen educational collaboration and share professional expertise between the two nations.
Led by its Principal, Dk Hajah Nooramaliatifah Pg Haji Ahmad, the delegation was warmly received by SMK Labuan’s Senior Assistant of Co-curriculum, Rahman Jumat (representing Principal Kitli Beka), Senior Assistant of the Form Six Centre, Saminan Sabtu, and the centre’s faculty members.
Also present to welcome the delegates were the Labuan Education Department Deputy Director of Learning Sector, Awang Rozlan Manan; Form Six Desk Officer, Norhayati Yahya; and SMK Labuan Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) President, Susanna Ariff Koh.
Prior to the campus tour, both parties engaged in a presentation and knowledge-sharing session at the Botanical Room of the Labuan Education Department.
During the session, SMK Labuan lecturer Mohamad Adnan presented his best practices titled “Engaging the Advanced Learner Using Informative Videos to Boost Motivation in Form Six English.” Meanwhile, Irwansah Sarri shared his presentation on improving student competency in Islamic Education assignments using the PBSD technique.
Representing the Brunei institution, Dr. Faridah Abdul Hamid and Ustazah DayangKu Sa’adatul Hanan Pengiran Datuk Seri Setia Dr Mohamad showcased their college’s best practices in developing teaching professionalism to drive quality and academic achievement.
Additionally, the Labuan Education Department’s School Improvement Specialist Coaches (SISC+) officer, Suriani Oxley, introduced the “12-Step Action Research” method. As the pioneer of this method, she highlighted its user-friendly approach designed to make research more accessible for educators.
The delegation later toured the new Form Six Centre block at SMK Labuan, which houses nine classrooms and a 40-capacity lecturer room. The visit aimed to enhance professional knowledge sharing in pedagogy and educational management to empower the quality of education at both institutions.
Moving forward, both parties plan to organize a 12-Step Action Research Colloquium involving pre-university students from SMK Labuan and Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah to cultivate a culture of research and innovation in learning.
Saminan Sabtu noted that the goodwill visit was a profound honor for SMK Labuan and yielded a highly positive impact regarding the exchange of best practices in pre-university education between Malaysia and Brunei.
“Educational collaboration not only enriches the experiences of both parties but also shapes knowledgeable, competitive global citizens with integrity, ultimately elevating the education quality of both institutions,” he said.
As part of their academic itinerary, the Brunei delegation also visited Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL).
They were welcomed by the Head of Administration and Human Resources Sector (SPSM), Mas Adi Alimin, who represented UMSKAL Director Professor Dr. Shamsul Bahari Shamsudin.
At the Kiamsam Meeting Room, Mas Adi briefed the delegates on the campus’s history since its establishment in May 1999 and its current academic landscape. UMSKAL offers various programs through two main faculties: the Faculty of International Finance Labuan (FKAL) and the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI), supported by the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning (PPIB).
The delegates also enjoyed panoramic views of the Federal Territory of Labuan from the Official Lunar Observation Site on Level 13 of the UMSKAL Tower, which became a highlight of the tour.
It is hoped that this continuous collaboration between Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, SMK Labuan Form Six Centre, and UMSKAL will pave the way for more high-impact programs, producing competent educators and globally competitive students while cementing the strong educational ties between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.
