LABUAN — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, chaired the Federal Territory of Labuan Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Development Direction Coordination Meeting at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL), here, today.
Through the Federal Territories Department (JWP), Yeoh expressed her steadfast commitment to ensuring that all proposed plans and initiatives achieve their targeted goals to drive the region’s vocational education forward.
Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has expressed its readiness to welcome collaborations with government departments and agencies, as well as industry and private sector players, to ensure the success of TVET programmes in the region.
UMSKAL Director, Prof Dr Shamsul Bahari Shamsudin, noted that the campus, which has been operating since January 1999, has great potential to serve as a strategic partner in developing a TVET centre of excellence. Located about 18 kilometres from the town centre, UMSKAL is fully prepared to support research initiatives, programme matching, and active academia-industry engagement.
The crucial coordination meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including the Director-General of Federal Territories Department Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain, the Deputy Director-General of Federal Territories Department (Planning and Development) Farah Adura Hamidi, and UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Datuk Dr Rossita Shapawi.
Also present were Labuan Corporation Chairman Datuk Mohd Husni Mohamad Salleh and Labuan Corporation Chief Executive Officer Rithuan Mohd Ismail.
Earlier upon arrival, Yeoh was greeted by Prof Datuk Dr Rossita. Following a brief photo session and the signing of the visitor’s book, Prof Dr Shamsul Bahari presented the minister with a book as a commemorative souvenir, thanking her for selecting UMSKAL as the venue for the Labuan TVET meeting.
During her visit, Yeoh also took the opportunity to tour the Moon Sighting Observatory on Level 13. Fascinated by the panoramic views of the duty-free island, she expressed her hopes of returning to visit UMSKAL in the future.
