LABUAN — Thirty-six students from SMK Taun Gusi II in Kota Belud visited Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) today to gain exposure to higher education opportunities and career pathways.

The educational visit was organised by the school’s Guidance and Counselling Unit in collaboration with its hostel management and accompanied by eight teachers led by Senior Assistant for Co-curricular Affairs Jhonny Balatek.

Representing school principal Soo Yong Huat, Jhonny said the visit aimed to broaden students’ knowledge beyond the classroom and expose them to further education and career opportunities.

“The programme also provides students with experiential learning opportunities through exposure to Labuan’s historical sites, cultural diversity and unique attractions.

“It also aims to instil in students an appreciation for peace and harmony among the country’s diverse cultures, religions and ethnic communities,” he said.

Earlier, the delegation was welcomed by UMSKAL director Prof Dr Shamsul Bahari Shamsudin, who expressed hope that the students would consider pursuing their tertiary education at the campus.

He encouraged them to focus on their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations and strive for excellent results before pursuing studies in finance or computing at UMSKAL.

“I hope this visit will motivate the students to work harder and achieve excellent results in their examinations,” he said.

The students also attended briefings by Labuan Faculty of International Finance (FKAL) Deputy Dean (Academic and International), Dr Ricky Chia Chee Jiun, and Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI) Multimedia Technology programme head Dr Mohammad Fadhli Asli at the Kiamsam Seminar Room.

They were also taken on a tour of FKI’s laboratory on Level 9 and enjoyed the panoramic views from Level 13.

Also present were Senior Assistant Registrar Mas Adi Alimin and Administrative Assistant Officers Mohizam Mohamad and Dony Lidaus Jinik, who coordinated the visit.
