LABUAN — The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has issued a compound notice to a retail trader in the Labuan outskirts for using expired weighing equipment.
KPDN Labuan director Junaidah Arbain said the offence was detected during an enforcement inspection at the trader’s premises.
She said checks revealed that the trader was using a spring balance scale that had not been re-verified for over a decade, with its verification period having expired on Oct 13, 2014.
“This is a serious breach of Section 14 of the Weights and Measures Act 1972 (Act 71),” she said in a statement today.
Under the act, offenders face a maximum fine of RM10,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both, upon conviction.
Junaidah reminded traders that all weighing and measuring instruments must be verified to ensure they remain within the legal validity period.
“This is to guarantee measurement accuracy and protect consumer interests,” she said.
She urged the public to report any information on violations of retail and trade laws to KPDN.
