LABUAN — Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) had recently organised an investment talk titled “From Learning to Earning: Practical Stock Trading Strategies for Students” in conjunction with the 8th Annual Stock Trading Competition 2026, held at the Central Lecture Hall 1 (DKP 1).
In his welcoming address, Dean of the Labuan Faculty of International Finance (FKAL), Associate Professor Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal, reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to producing financially literate, innovative graduates who are ready to meet the increasingly challenging demands of the industry.
“We encourage our students to continuously update their resumes and Curriculum Vitae by incorporating digital skills, analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) elements to enhance their competitiveness in a global job market that is increasingly driven by technology and digital transformation,” he said.
The event featured guest speakers from the industry, namely Bursa Young Investor Club Managers Shane Choo and Vincent Voo, as well as Siti Nur Idayu Samrin from RHB Investment Bank.
Shane Choo shared practical stock trading strategies tailored specifically for university students, with emphasis on market behaviour, risk awareness, investment discipline, and strategic decision-making techniques essential for young investors seeking to enter the capital market.
Vincent Voo provided guidance on stock trading fundamentals, including procedures for opening a Central Depository System (CDS) account and understanding the mechanics of stock market participation.
Following the sharing session, 184 students expressed interest in opening CDS accounts with RHB Investment Bank as an initial step towards active participation in stock market investment — a development that underscores the growing awareness and confidence among students regarding the importance of financial literacy and early capital market involvement.
Participants also had the opportunity to interact directly with industry practitioners throughout the programme, gaining deeper insights into investment planning, market dynamics, and risk management strategies.
The programme was organised by the International Finance HE19 Club with Bursa Malaysia as the main sponsor, alongside strategic collaboration with LifeChamp and RHB Investment Bank.
The event drew an overwhelming response, with 419 students registered and approximately 373 participants in attendance throughout the session, reflecting a growing interest among students in stock trading, investment strategies, and real-world exposure to financial markets.
The programme brought together academic leaders, industry practitioners and students on a collaborative platform aimed at bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical investment application.
In support of financial literacy development and investment education among students, Bursa Malaysia also contributed cash prize sponsorship for the 8th Stock Trading Competition, scheduled for June 12 and 13, 2026 — reflecting the exchange’s continued commitment to empowering the younger generation through capital market education and experience-based investment initiatives.
The strategic collaboration between higher education institutions and industry players demonstrates the importance of academia-industry synergy in producing investment-savvy, competitive graduates prepared to face the challenges of the global economy.
Through programmes such as the Stock Trading Competition and investment talks, UMSKAL continues to play a significant role in equipping students with practical financial knowledge, industry exposure, and critical decision-making skills necessary to navigate an increasingly dynamic and competitive global financial landscape.
Present were Deputy Dean of Academic and International Affairs Dr. Ricky Chia Chee Jiun, Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation Dr. Alesia Sigang Gukang, Head of International Finance Programme Dr. Siti Nur Aqilah Ab Wahab, and Head of Banking and Offshore Programme Dr. Andrew Saw Tek Wei.
