LABUAN — The Federal Territories Department recently held an Engagement Session (SLU) and Coordination Meeting for the Labuan Federal Territory Food Security Strategic Plan 2026-2030.
The workshop, held at the Eureka Room of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) Tower Building, served as a crucial foundation for drafting a comprehensive, practical, and forward-looking food security plan for the island.
Federal Territories Department Deputy Director-General (Management and Socio-Economic) Datuk Parang Abai @ Thomas said the workshop, which drew about 50 participants, was more than just an administrative routine.
“It is a turning point in determining the direction of survival for Labuan residents over the next five years. Our vision is clear: to be a leader in sustainable urban and island food security,” he said at the closing ceremony here.
He added that proactive measures must be taken to ensure that every Labuan resident has continuous access to sufficient, safe, and affordable food.
To achieve this, steering and working committees have been established to underscore that food security is a shared responsibility.
“I want to emphasise to everyone that the strategic plan produced must not just look good on paper; we want a plan whose benefits can be felt at the dining table of every household in Labuan,” Parang said.
He expressed hope that the collaborative spirit fostered during the workshop would be continuously strengthened to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the food security agenda.
Parang noted that food security is not merely about supply, but deeply encompasses the well-being of the people, economic stability, and the continuity of regional development.
He also extended his appreciation to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) and its agencies, the Labuan Corporation, and UMSKAL, which provided both logistical support and expert advisory services.
“By adopting smart agricultural technology, strengthening logistical systems, and fostering close cooperation from all parties, we can reduce our reliance on external imports and subsequently guarantee the socio-economic stability of all Labuan residents,” he added.
Also present were Federal Territories Department Socio-Economic Division Director Mohd Sharif Mohamad Yaakob, Labuan Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mohd Rithuan Ismail, UMSKAL Director Professor Dr. Shamsul Bahari Shamsudin, and Federal Territories Department Socio-Economic Division Deputy Director Datuk Mohd Zulkifli Hashim.
