KUANTAN, Pahang — More than 1,300 students from 25 schools nationwide participated in the third Eco-Schools Green Science & Technology Carnival, organised by BASF PETRONAS Chemicals Sdn Bhd (BPC) and Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF), here today.

Held at SM Teknik Kuantan with the support of the Ministry of Education (MOE), the carnival marked the culmination of the Green Innovation Science Project (GISPRO) 2026, a platform for students to develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

GISPRO 2026 recorded its highest participation to date, with 92 schools submitting 180 project videos showcasing practical solutions to various environmental issues.

The finalists presented their innovations to a panel of judges comprising representatives from academia, industry and environmental organisations.

The carnival also featured hands-on STEM activities and sustainability-focused experiential learning sessions conducted by BPC volunteers and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), giving students exposure to research and innovation at university and industry levels.

BPC Managing Director Tan Aik Meam said the record participation reflected the growing interest among Malaysian students in using science and technology to address sustainability challenges.

“The record participation in GISPRO 2026 is a strong reflection of the creativity and commitment of Malaysian students towards building a more sustainable future.

“Through initiatives such as GISPRO and the Eco-Schools Green Science & Technology Carnival, we aim to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to become tomorrow’s sustainability and innovation leaders,” he said.

GGAF Executive Director Datuk Ir Ts Dr Mahadi Mohamad said the continued growth of GISPRO demonstrated the increasing importance of sustainability among the younger generation.

“By encouraging students to transform ideas into practical solutions, we are nurturing future changemakers who can contribute meaningfully to the nation’s sustainable development,” he said.

MOE Planning and Research Division Deputy Director Jasmi Md Isa said programmes such as GISPRO provided students with opportunities to develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills while strengthening their understanding of sustainability.

“These experiences help prepare the next generation for the opportunities and challenges of the future,” he said.

The carnival, now in its third year, brings together BPC, GGAF, UMPSA and educational partners in promoting sustainability education and experiential STEM learning among students. —Bernama
