KENINGAU — The search and rescue (SAR) operation for two individuals feared missing after testing a new boat in a river near Taman Bersatu entered its second day yesterday, with one victim found dead while another remains missing.

A spokesman for the Keningau Fire and Rescue Department said search efforts resumed at 6.10am, involving personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Civil Defence Force (APM), as well as members of the public.

He said the operation focused on surface searches along Sungai Banjar and Sungai Mempikit.

At 5.21pm, the body of the first victim, a 60-year-old man, was discovered by a civilian volunteer group, Team Gallen Star, about seven kilometres from the last known location.

“The victim was found in the river, trapped among drifting logs and oil palm branches. He was later confirmed dead and handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

The second victim, believed to be the man’s 10-year-old grandchild, has yet to be located.

The operation was called off at 6.37pm due to safety concerns and fading light.

Search efforts are expected to resume today.

The department also conveyed its condolences to the victims’ family and expressed appreciation to all agencies and members of the public involved in the operation.
