LABUAN — The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Labuan has taken enforcement action against a vehicle workshop operator in the town area following a consumer complaint and a subsequent inspection conducted today.

Investigations revealed that the operator failed to provide a written statement to the consumer before initiating repair services. This is a mandatory requirement under Regulation 6 of the Consumer Protection (Workshops Information Disclosure) Regulations 2002, enforced under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 [Act 599].

Under the current regulations, workshop operators are legally obligated to provide consumers with written information prior to any repair work. This include estimated repair costs, details of spare parts to be used, service charges and scope and nature of the repair work

Failure to comply with these requirements undermines a consumer’s right to transparent information and the ability to make an informed decision before agreeing to services.

The workshop operator was issued a compound for the violation. KPDN reminds the industry of the heavy penalties associated with such offenses, individuals, a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

While, companies, a fine of up to RM100,000.

Director of KPDN Labuan Junaidah Arbain emphasized that these regulations are vital for ensuring transparency and preventing disputes regarding charges or the scope of work.

“KPDN Labuan will continue to intensify inspections and monitoring. We will not compromise with any party that fails to comply with the law. We urge the public to continue channeling complaints and information to KPDN to ensure immediate enforcement action can be taken for the benefit of the community.”

Consumers are encouraged to report any unfair business practices through official KPDN channels to protect their rights and interests.
