LABUAN — The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Labuan is investigating a convenience store for allegedly displaying a misleading promotional price on a sanitary pad product.
KPDN Labuan director Junaidah Arbain said enforcement officers inspected the premises today following a public tip-off under the Consumer Protection Act 1999.
She said the inspection found that the product was still displayed with a promotional price tag of RM3.19 per unit, although the promotion was only valid from April 27 to May 31, 2026.
“However, during payment at the counter, the product was charged at its original price of RM4.50 after being scanned through the sales system.
“The difference between the displayed price and the price charged could mislead consumers when making purchases,” she said in a statement today.
Junaidah said the premises supervisor was suspected of committing an offence under Paragraph 12(1)(a) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 for giving a misleading representation on the price of goods for trade purposes.
She said the product involved had been seized for further investigation under the same Act.
If convicted, action may be taken under Section 145 of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both, for a first offence.
For subsequent offences, offenders may face a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Junaidah reminded all traders to ensure that displayed prices are accurate, clear and consistent with the prices charged at payment counters.
She said this was important to protect consumer rights and ensure fair and transparent trade practices.
Consumers are also advised to check the prices of goods before making payment and keep purchase receipts as proof in the event of any price discrepancy.
Any information on trade misconduct can be channelled to KPDN for further action.
