LABUAN — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Labuan district headquarters has launched an investigation into a fire involving a lorry at the Labuan Fisheries open parking lot along Jalan Ujong Pasir early this morning.
Acting Labuan District Police Chief, DSP Robin @ Ridzuan bin Ismail, stated that the police received the initial report regarding the incident at approximately 12am from a member of the public who reported a lorry on fire at the location.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the white Isuzu lorry, owned by a local company, caught fire at the front section while parked in the open parking area.
“The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze and successfully brought the fire under full control within a short period ,” he said in a statement today.
No casualties were reported in the incident. However, the lorry sustained severe damage, with losses estimated at around RM100,000.
Initial findings also indicated that the incident took place in an open area easily accessible to the public.
DSP Robin added that the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire.
The offense carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison and a fine upon conviction.
He further noted that PDRM is conducting an in-depth investigation, which includes obtaining a fire forensics report from JBPM and tracking down independent witnesses to assist with the probe.
