TAMBUNAN — A 74-year-old man who was reported missing after going to a river to fish in Kampung Noudu here was found unconscious beneath a suspension bridge at Sungai Noudu today.
The victim, identified as Markus@Marchous Antigang, was discovered by his son at 9.42am during a search and rescue (SAR) operation involving multiple agencies and villagers.
The spokesperson of Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said they received an emergency call from Tambunan District Police at 8am regarding a missing person at the river.
“Based on information provided by the victim’s family, the man had left his house at about 4pm yesterday to cast a fishing net at Sungai Pagalan but failed to return home,” said the spokesperson.
Meanwhile, a team from the Tambunan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) arrived at the scene at 8.04am and commenced SAR operations at 8.10am together with other rescue agencies and villagers.
“The operation involved water surface search and rescue techniques covering a radius of 4.7 kilometres,” said Senior Fire Officer I Johnny John Jinuli who led the search and rescue operation.
Following the discovery, the victim was taken to Tambunan Hospital by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
A total of 12 personnel from BBP Tambunan were involved in the operation, assisted by members from the police, Civil Defence Force (APM), prison department, local volunteer groups, resort staff and villagers.
When contacted, police confirmed that the victim had died.
