LABUAN — Sabah-based busking group Angkara Band is expanding its musical journey beyond the state after making its debut performance in the Federal Territory of Labuan during the Semenanjung Vendor Trip to Labuan programme, held from Aug 12 to 16.

The group performed at the International Lawn Ball Arena Labuan parking lot, marking an important milestone for the band, which was formed in 2023.

The opportunity to perform in Labuan, provided by organisers DSBC and Mr Yogurt, is also seen as recognition of the growing talent among local buskers.

Angkara Band is led by bassist Mohammad Azmi Awang Puteh and comprises lead guitarist Heldrey Ezra, lead vocalist Gismar Mizbar, female vocalist Wiwin Sheira, keyboardist Yusrin Abdul Hamid and drummer Muhammad Syafiq Nazri Jainudin.

Wiwin, who was specially brought in from Sandakan, is not only an experienced vocalist but is also active as an emcee for various events in the Sandakan area.

Since its establishment, Angkara Band has performed at several major programmes and events, including U Mobile’s Cara U Sabah ULTRA5G Fest in February 2026, which attracted more than 10,000 visitors and featured 5G innovations, entertainment performances and interactive technology experiences.

The group has also performed at Food Fest events in several districts, including Tenom, Keningau, Sook and Beaufort, as well as at a dinner organised by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

Azmi said the journey of Angkara Band, from busking by the roadside to performing on bigger stages, had been a meaningful experience for all its members.

He hoped more programme organisers nationwide would provide opportunities for buskers to showcase their talents at various events and programmes.

“Opportunities like this not only provide a platform for buskers to showcase their talents, but also recognise busking practitioners and help develop the country’s arts industry,” he said.

He also hoped the busking industry in Malaysia would receive greater recognition, as talents emerging from street performances could develop into professional entertainers when given the right opportunities.

The group’s appearance in Labuan demonstrates how an artistic journey can begin in humble surroundings but, with talent, effort, commitment and opportunities, artists can progress to bigger stages.
